“Generations” is one of the most personal songs on Undercurrent. It came from a small moment with my son that caught me off guard and suddenly felt much bigger than what was actually happening.
I was tying his shoes. That was it. A normal parent moment. Something you do without thinking much about it.
But while I was helping him, I suddenly thought about my own dad. I remembered being the kid in that same kind of moment - needing help, being taken care of, trusting that someone was there to guide me through the small things. And now I was the parent doing that for my own son.
That is where “Generations” came from.
The song is about realizing that these little moments are not really little. They are how love gets passed down. It is not always some huge life lesson or dramatic conversation. Sometimes it is tying a shoe, holding a hand, helping someone up, or showing them how to keep moving forward.
In that moment, I felt connected to both sides of the story. I was thinking about my father and everything he gave me, while also looking at my son and realizing I am now part of what gets passed on to him.
Musically, “Generations” still lives in the world of Undercurrent. It has the weight, guitars, and momentum of the album, but the heart of the song is reflective. It is a rock song, but underneath it is something very human: the feeling that family keeps moving through us, even in the quietest moments.
That is what I wanted to capture with “Generations” — the invisible thread between parent and child, past and future, memory and responsibility.
